What Causes Cellulite?

Cellulite is something that most people dread (usually women, regardless of weight or age), but not fully understand how it comes about. Here’s a brief explanation.

Underneath the skin, there is a layer of connective tissue whose job is to join the skin to the muscle underneath it. In most men, this layer of connective tissue is strewn across in a diagonal manner, characterised by a smooth and continuous pattern. This type of arrangement is typically immune to cellulite formation, but women are not as lucky—their connective tissue layer is strewn vertically. This vertically arranged tissue forms so-called fat chambers, which get filled up while the skin is pulled downward by the tissue’s bands.

Cellulite formation is caused by a myriad of factors. One of these is hormonal in nature. Certain hormones like estrogen, insulin, noradrenaline, prolactin, and thyroid hormones are likely to cause cellulite formation. Genetics is also a culprit, which means cellulite is pretty much an inherited trait.

The most obvious and common causes are lifestyle-related factors. Poor diet is one – people who eat foods high in fat, carbohydrates, or salt but contain too little fiber are at greater risk of cellulite formation. If accompanied by lack of exercise, the likelihood of cellulite appearance is much higher than that of those who eat and live right. Lastly, while pretty unprecedented, overly tight clothing have also been linked to cellulite formation, as these tight-fitting garments constrict blood flow.
